Today in Papal History will be posting from Rome through the end of this week.

Sorry for missing today’s post! We saw the pope in the morning, a former coworker flew in from Paris for the day to hang out, and we toured the Vatican Museums in the afternoon, so no time to put together a full post today unfortunately.

In the meantime, enjoy this picture of the interior of the Basilica of St. Clement – dedicated to the fourth pope in Church history, who was ordained a priest by St. Peter himself and was later martyred by being thrown into the sea around the year 99 AD.

One of the oldest churches in Rome, the current church (12th Century) is built on top of the 5th Century original basilica, which itself is built atop a 1st Century temple of the cult of Mithras.
